On August 27th at 4:11 East Meadow FD volunteers were alerted by Nassau County Firecom for a House Fire on Prospect Avenue.
Within minutes, Chief of Department James Walsh, 2nd Asst Chief Kurt Becker, 3rd Asst Chief Jeffrey Rosenthal, and Safety Officer 6155 radioed their response.
At 4:13am Chief Walsh arrived on the scene announcing a Signal 10, as heavy fire conditions had a hold of the entire right side of the home. (Signal 10 – Working Fire: Re-alert the initial response as dispatch calls in a pre-planned mutual aid response).
Soon after, Chief Walsh reported that “everyone is out” as first due Engine 612 was on the road immediately followed by Ladder 617, and Engine 611.
On scene the crew of Engine 612 connected the a nearby hydrant and stretched attack hose lines, as ladder 617 crews gained entry, and began setting up ladders.
With the firefight on, firefighters were able to cut of the fire holding it to the right side of the home as Engines 3, 4, Ladder 2, Heavy Rescue 6, and Ambulance 615 were arriving to supplement the initial attack.
Medical crews established medical command and treatment area in the event of any injuries.
Within 25 minutes, all visible fire had been knocked down as crews continued to “open up” and soak down smoldering materials.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal was on scene to investigate the cause, as was the Ladies Auxiliary to provide energy fluids to spent firefighters.
Although the home suffered extensive heat, smoke, and water damage throughout, fire damage was confined to the right side of the home.
In all, 56 East Meadow volunteers responded on the 1st alarm, with another 25 volunteers from North Merrick FD, North Bellmore FD, Uniondale FD, and Bellmore FD, either responded to the scene or covered the empty East Meadow fire stations in the events of any other alarms.
There were no injuries.
