The East Meadow Fire Department Junior Fire Company was started over 50 years ago. A division of the Boy Scouts, the program is officially known as “Explorer Post 610” and accepts community youth ages 14 to 17 who are interested in becoming a member of the fire service at 18. The Junior Fire Company generally holds two meetings and two training sessions each month, although the schedule may vary.

The Junior Firefighter program provides an opportunity to learn about fire, rescue, and emergency medical services in a safe, controlled, educational, and fun environment. It also promotes valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and commitment.

Some benefits of joining the Junior Fire Company are:

  • Various scholarships and grants provided for higher education
  • Ability to enroll in EMT school via Nassau BOCES in partnership with Nassau VEEB
  • Volunteer participation hours, which are often required for college admissions and other programs
