East Meadow

Bureau of Fire Prevention

The East Meadow Fire Department formed the Bureau of Fire Prevention in 1959. The goal of the Bureau of Fire Prevention is to promote fire safety and educate the public in regards to fire awareness as to prevent unnecessary destructive fires.

The Bureau of Fire Prevention conducts fire and life safety inspections for commercial properties under the Nassau County Fire Prevention Ordinance. These inspections are performed annually, in order to detect and correct fire hazard(s), to ensure public safety.

During routine inspections the Bureau of Fire Prevention sends a Fire Inspector to conduct a walk-thru and note any hazard(s) that may exist. If any fire hazard(s) are observed, the owner is notified and given a reasonable time to correct the hazard(s). A re-inspection is scheduled to verify all fire hazard(s) have been corrected. The Nassau County Office of Fire Marshal has overall jurisdiction on enforcing the Nassau County Fire Prevention Ordinance.

The fire and life safety inspections provide a valuable source of information for Firefighters. The knowledge gained from these inspections help Firefighters during emergency responses so that they can better serve the public.
