At 6:08 PM om November 7the East Meadow Fire Communications alerted Engine Co 2 and Ladder Co 1 for “Smoke in the Area, on Karen Court.
In a short period on time Asst Chief Michael Wood and 2nd Asst Chief Kurt Becker where on the road, soon following by Engine 612, Heavy Rescue 616, and Ladder 617.
On arrival Chiefs and Engine 2 firefighters were met with smoke seeping from a large 2 story split level home.
Asst Chief Wood quickly gave a radio report announcing a Signal 98 (1st Pumper In Connects to a Hydrant) as the crew from Engine 612 made the connection and stretched (2) attack hose lines to the home.
As smoke continued to worsen inside the home, firefighters made their way to the basement and located the small fire.
Within 10 minutes all fire had been extinguished as firefighters wearing their self contained breathing apparatus opened windows to clear out the toxic smoke. Damage by fire was confined to a small area in the basement of the home.
Had it not been for our observant neighbors this fire would have been much worse and be a greater risk to our firefighters.
Within 30 minutes Asst Chief Wood began releasing units from the scene.
The cause of the fire was put into the hands of the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
There were no injuries.
