EAST MEADOW, NY — September 18, 2025 — Aiming to prepare its volunteer firefighters for the hazards of real-life firefighting while reducing potential risks associated with live-fire training, the East Meadow Fire Department recently unveiled Flaim FTS mixed reality firefighter training system, the world’s first immersive technology that delivers safe, cost-effective firefighting training without exposure to live fire. East Meadow is the first fire department on Long Island to use the innovative training device.
Thanks to a $65,000 grant secured by Nassau County Legislator Tom McKevitt, the East Meadow Fire Department was able to purchase the Flaim FTS system. Legislator McKevitt was recently on hand to observe the state-of-the-art training device in use, which was demonstrated by Firefighter Joseph D’Alessandro of Engine Company #4. After seeing the Flaim FTS system in action, Legislator McKevitt donned the virtual reality goggles and got a first-hand feel for live fire conditions that a firefighter might encounter while battling a live blaze.
The Flaim FTS system effectively replicates the physical characteristics of real firefighting equipment, ensuring users experience the authentic operation of a high-pressure fire hose. It features a heat vest that intensifies in temperature as the trainee approaches the simulated flame, creating a dynamic training environment. As trainees engage in firefighting scenarios, the audio and scenario elements respond in real time, mirroring the simulated water flow controlled by the user.
The Flaim FTS training package includes a tablet that empowers trainers to establish specific learning objectives tailored to their training goals. Trainers have immediate access to live performance data, enabling them to conduct data-driven post-action reviews and critiques. Moreover, the system offers data recording, analytics, and reporting capabilities to highlight performance metrics, which are essential for refining future training strategies.
“I am truly impressed with the cutting-edge technology the East Meadow Fire Department is using to enhance training and strengthen public safety for our residents. It’s an honor to have helped secure the grant funding that made this new virtual reality training system possible. This investment in innovation ensures our firefighters are even better prepared to protect and serve our community,” said Nassau County Legislator Tom McKevitt after experiencing the Flaim system first-hand.
“With a commitment to fiscal responsibility and the safety of our volunteer firefighters, we are pleased to introduce Flaim Trainer to our members, said Commissioner John J. Priest, Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. “We are also grateful to Legislator McKevitt for securing the funds for this innovative and vital tool, and for his longstanding support of the East Meadow Fire Department and the volunteer fire services throughout Nassau County.”
“We remain committed to providing our volunteer firefighters with ongoing, technologically advanced training to not only ensure their safety, but that of the public we serve,” said Chief of Department, Michael Wood, who was also on hand to see the live demonstration. “Training not only provides necessary skills and teaches situational awareness but also fosters teamwork while promoting confidence and leadership among the ranks of East Meadow’s volunteer firefighters, and we are greatly appreciative of Legislator McKevitt’s efforts on our behalf.”
The East Meadow Fire Department, which serves East Meadow and parts of Levittown and Westbury (including Salisbury), is always seeking new members to join their ranks as firefighters or emergency medical personnel; no prior experience is necessary. The fire department provides the training required. There are numerous benefits associated with volunteering, including tax breaks, college scholarships, annual health checkups, life insurance, and a service award pension program, all at no cost.
